Ravens Elevate John Harbaugh

On Saturday, the Baltimore Ravens hired Philadelphia Eagles Secondary Coach John Harbaugh. According to Harbaugh, he is not a compromise hire. “As far as being perceived as the second choice ... that's irrelevant to me,” Harbaugh said. “I never thought about it in those terms, never would. It doesn't matter. It's an opportunity to go forward.”

According to Owner Steve Bisciotti, Harbaugh is the correct choice. “Do I like a guy that has to earn his resume? Yeah. I kind of made a living on hiring people with thin resumes and it's worked out pretty well for me in the last 25 years,” Bisciotti said. “I think that works to John's advantage. I said three weeks ago you have to take chances to be successful. You have to be willing to do things that the masses wouldn't do, or I don't think you will be able to separate yourself from the masses. Is it a little bit more of a perceived chance? Yeah, but the time we spent with John Harbaugh gave me a comfort level that we hired the right guy. You go with your instincts, and I have pretty good instincts. ... I like the fact that John gets to build his legend right here.”

In 1999, the Ravens hired glitzy. Brian Billick was a renowned coordinator. Harbaugh is an unknown. He may succeed. However, one must state the obvious. When Billick was fired, the Ravens expected improvement. They hired a position coach.

Michigan Embraces Former Son

Must win. The aforesaid evokes anticipation, apprehension, and anxiety. Finality and tension are inherent. Alternatives are non-existent. Obviously, this proposition is daunting. However, the triumphs are exponentially sweeter.

On Tuesday, Governor Mitt Romney won the Michigan Republican Primary. Romney (39%) dominated Senator John McCain (30%), Governor Mike Huckabee (16%), Congressman Ron Paul (6%), and former Senator Fred Thompson (4%).

During his victory speech, Romney quantified his conquest. “Tonight proves that you can't tell an American that there's something that they just can't do because Americans can do whatever they set their hearts on,” he said. “Tonight is a victory of optimism over Washington-style pessimism. Tonight, we are celebrating here in Michigan, I've got to tell you that. Guess what they're doing in Washington? They're worrying, because they realize, the lobbyists and the politicians realize, that America now understands that Washington is broken, and we're going to do something about it.”

Meanwhile, McCain discussed his defeat. “We fell a little short tonight. But we have no cause to be discouraged or to second guess what we might have done differently,” he said. “We did what we always try to do: we went to Michigan and told people the truth. I am as committed now as I have ever been to making sure that no state, whether its Michigan or South Carolina or anywhere in this blessed country, is left behind in the global economy. But that global economy is here to stay and it is, by its nature, constantly changing. To compete more successfully in it we must better prepare American workers and students to seize its opportunities. That is how we will build a stronger and more prosperous America. That is what I told the people of Michigan. And I don't believe I could have honestly told them anything else.”

Poignantly, Chris Daughtry’s lyrics frame this evening. Amidst defeat, Romney came home… the place where he belonged. Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina had gotten old. Thus, Romney went home.

Congress Targets Tejada; Selig & Fehr Discuss Steroids

On Tuesday, the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee requested an investigation. Their quarry? Miguel Tejada. Their objective? Determine Tejada’s credibility. In 2005, Tejada denied performance enhancing drug utilization. He also denied knowing any offenders.

Bud Selig: “I'm proud of the progress we've made. I never delude myself, because I know there's always more work to be done. But when you think of where we were three years ago to where we are ... I appreciated the response from them today. Do I wish we could have reacted quicker? Should we have? One could make the case. All of us have to take responsibility, starting with me.”

Donald Fehr: “Did we or did I appreciate the depth of the problem? ... The answer is 'No. It's a failure that we didn't, and it's a failure that I didn't.”

Parcells Pick: Dolphins Select Sparano

On Wednesday, the Miami Dolphins hired Dallas Cowboys Assistant Head Coach Tony Sparano. Sparano signed a 4-year contract. “When Bill [Parcells] and I discussed what we were looking for in a head coach, we talked about one of high character,” said General Manager Jeff Ireland. “We wanted someone who understood how to develop young players, one who could instill a culture that's all about winning. We think we found that guy. We know we found that guy.”

During his press conference, Sparano confronted the future. “Coach Parcells has taught me the most, prepared me the most for this job,” he said. “He's taught me a great deal and I'm going to continue to learn as much as I can. I don't really care what happened in the past. “I'm not afraid of challenges. I look forward to them.”

Familiarity breeds contempt? Familiarity breeds success. Familiarity engenders confidence and trust. Following Cam Cameron’s disaster, Parcells coveted expertise. He prioritized fortitude. Given the aforesaid, Sparano is perfect.

Clinton, McCain Squelch Momentum, Score New Hampshire

Assume nothing. Direct. Simple. Unequivocal. Yet, humans assume. We imagine ramifications and scenarios. We presuppose results. Clichés caution us. History warns us. Yet, we assume. We paralyze ourselves with the invalid.

On January 8, Senator Hillary Clinton won the New Hampshire Democratic Primary. Simultaneously, Senator John McCain won the New Hampshire Republican Primary. Clinton (39%) slipped Senator Barack Obama (37%). McCain (37%) outscored Governor Mitt Romney (32%).

During her victory speech, Clinton credited New Hampshire. “Over the last week, I listened to you and in the process, I found my own voice,” she said. “I felt like we all spoke from our hearts, and I am so gratified that you responded. Now, together, let’s give America the kind of comeback that New Hampshire has just given me.”

Meanwhile, McCain recounted his strategy. “When the pundits declared us finished, I told them, "I'm going to New Hampshire, where the voters don't let you make their decision for them,"” he said. “And when they asked, "how are you going to do it? You're down in the polls. You don't have the money." I answered, "I'm going to New Hampshire, and I'm going to tell people the truth.”

Women incited Clinton’s resurgence. Clinton garnered them (46-34), caucasian females (46-33), and non-caucasian females (50-38). She also scored parents (39-37), married women (45-32), non-married women (51-32). Amidst his defeat, Obama remained positive. “A few weeks ago, no one imagined that we'd have accomplished what we did here tonight,” he said. “For most of this campaign, we were far behind, and we always knew our climb would be steep. But in record numbers, you came out and spoke up for change. And with your voices and your votes, you made it clear that at this moment – in this election – there is something happening in America.”

L.L. Cool J owns this evening. For Clinton and McCain, do not call this a comeback. We have been here before.

President Confronts “Challenging Period”

President Bush: “Over the past several months I've held a series of meetings with my economic team on the outlook for the U.S. economy. And before I left for the Middle East, I directed them to conduct a thorough assessment of our economic condition, consult with members of Congress, and provide me with their recommendations about any actions we might need to take.”

The economic team reports that our economy has a solid foundation, but that there are areas of real concern. Our economy is still creating jobs, though at a reduced pace. Consumer spending is still growing, but the housing market is declining. Business investment and exports are still rising, but the cost of imported oil has increased.”

“My administration has been watching our economy carefully. My advisors and many outside experts expect that our economy will continue to grow over the coming year, but at a slower rate than we have enjoyed for the past few years. And there is a risk of a downturn. Continued instability in the housing and financial markets could cause additional harm to our overall economy, and put our growth and job creation in jeopardy.”

“In recent months, we've taken steps to shore up the housing market, including measures to help struggling homeowners avoid foreclosure and to keep their homes. I've also asked Congress to pass legislation to modernize the Federal Housing Administration and enable it to provide additional assistance to struggling homeowners. The House passed a bill and the Senate passed a bill, and now they need to get together and get a bill to my desk as quickly as possible.”

“After careful consideration, and after discussions with members of Congress, I have concluded that additional action is needed. To keep our economy growing and creating jobs, Congress and the administration need to work to enact an economic growth package as soon as possible.”

“As Congress considers such a plan, there are certain principles that must guide its deliberations: This growth package must be big enough to make a difference in an economy as large and dynamic as ours -- which means it should be about 1 percent of GDP. This growth package must be built on broad-based tax relief that will directly affect economic growth -- and not the kind of spending projects that would have little immediate impact on our economy. This growth package must be temporary and take effect right away -- so we can get help to our economy when it needs it most. And this growth package must not include any tax increases.”

“Specifically, this growth package should bolster both business investment and consumer spending, which are critical to economic growth. And this would require two key provisions: To be effective, a growth package must include tax incentives for American businesses, including small businesses, to make major investments in their enterprises this year. Giving them an incentive to invest now will encourage business owners to expand their operations, create new jobs, and inject new energy into our economy in the process.”

“To be effective, a growth package must also include direct and rapid income tax relief for the American people. Americans could use this money as they see fit -- to help meet their monthly bills, cover higher costs at the gas pump, or pay for other basic necessities. Letting Americans keep more of their own money should increase consumer spending, and lift our economy at a time when people otherwise might spend less.”

“Yesterday, I spoke to members of the congressional leadership from both political parties. They shared with me their thoughts on the best way forward. And I was encouraged by those discussions and I believe there is enough broad consensus that we can come up with a package that can be approved with bipartisan support. I've asked Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson to lead my administration's efforts to forge an agreement with Congress, so that we can deliver this needed boost to our economy as quickly as possible.”

“Passing a new growth package is our most pressing economic priority. When that is done, Congress must turn to the most important economic priority for our country, and that's making sure the tax relief that is now in place is not taken away. A source of uncertainty in our economy is that this tax relief is set to expire at the end of 2010. Unless Congress acts, the American people will face massive tax increases in less than three years. The marriage penalty will make a comeback; the child tax credit will be cut in half; the death tax will come back to life; and tax rates will go up on regular income, capital gains, and dividends. This tax increase would put jobs and economic growth at risk, and Congress has a responsibility to keep that from happening. So it's critical that Congress make this tax relief permanent.”

“We're in the midst of a challenging period, and I know Americans are concerned about our economic future. But our economy has seen challenging times before -- and it is resilient.”

“In a vibrant economy, markets rise and decline. We cannot change that fundamental dynamic. As a matter of fact, eliminating risk altogether would also eliminate the innovation and productivity that drives the creation of jobs and wealth in America. Yet there are also times when swift and temporary actions can help ensure that inevitable market adjustments do not undermine the health of the broader economy. This is such a moment.”

“By passing an effective growth package quickly, we can provide a shot in the arm to keep a fundamentally strong economy healthy. And it will help keep economic sectors that are going through adjustments, such as the housing market, from adversely affecting other parts of our economy.”

“I'm optimistic about our economic future, because Americans have shown time and again that they are the most industrious, creative, and enterprising people in the world. That is what has made our economy strong. That is what will make it stronger in the challenging times ahead. Thank you.”

“Waterboarding is Torture”

Secretary Tom Ridge: “There's just no doubt in my mind — under any set of rules — waterboarding is torture. One of America's greatest strengths is the soft power of our value system and how we treat prisoners of war, and we don't torture. And I believe, unlike others in the administration, that waterboarding was, is — and will always be — torture. That's a simple statement. I have no idea how any of the intelligence community extrapolated any information from anybody — where they got it, how they got it, and from whom they got it. But waterboarding is torture. As a former soldier, I will tell you that we go to great pains, and a lot of men and women, who serve in the military at risk of their own lives, do everything they can to minimize civilian casualties and certainly do everything they can to respect the Geneva Convention.”

Obama Compliments Reagan, Rival Criticizes Obama

Barack Obama: “Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not. He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it.”

John Edwards: “Ronald Reagan, the man who busted unions, the man who did everything in his power to destroy the organized labor movement, the man who created a tax structure that favored the richest Americans against middle class and working families, ... we know that Ronald Reagan is not an example of change for a presidential candidate running in the Democratic Party. I would never use Ronald Reagan as an example of change.”

Obama Garners Endorsement Trifecta

Last week, Senator John Kerry, Congressman George Miller, and Governor Janet Napolitano endorsed Barack Obama. Miller and Napolitano’s endorsements are intriguing. They signify institutional acceptance. Miller’s conveys Nancy Pelosi’s support. Kerry’s endorsement is irrelevant. Former failures do not endorse. Ask Michael Dukakis.

Randy Moss' Accuser Responds Via Attorney

David McGill: “Ms. Washington has been unfairly characterized as someone simply seeking financial gain. In fact, it was Mr. Moss' representatives who first contacted our office to offer a 'six figure' settlement with hopes of not having this incident become public record. It has never been her intention to hurt Mr. Moss in any way. However, she has suffered mental and physical harm as a result of his actions. She simply wants him to take responsibility for what he has done. As a battery victim, she has shown great strength throughout this entire ordeal. We have heard Mr. Moss' statement regarding the incident. He has acknowledged that he was at Ms. Washington's Florida residence and that he was 'guilty' of an 'accident' which occurred. However, Mr. Moss fails to mention how his reckless and degrading conduct rendered Ms. Washington unable to drive her vehicle to seek medical attention. As the evidence will show, there is serious doubt that Mr. Moss is capable of recalling with clarity the exact details of what transpired that evening. As Mr. Moss has previously stated, "Do your homework and check his resume.”

Star Scores; Cashmere Mafia Marvelous

Specialization is imperative. Specialization creates employment. Twenty should not complete one task. People should split tasks. They should pursue fortes. A starter wearily slogging nine innings… this is stupid. A starter gutting six innings, middle relievers surviving two innings, and a closer scorching the ninth inning… this is baseball.

On January 6, I viewed ABC’s “Cashmere Mafia.” Darren Star’s (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and Sex in the City) creation is brilliant. Casting and dialogue are exemplary. Musical scoring and scenery are excellent. Simply stated, Cashmere Mafia possesses an ensnaring sparkle.

The venture is replete with exemplary acting. Lucy Liu (Mia Mason), Frances O’Connor (Zoe Burden), and Miranda Otto (Juliet Draper) are stellar. Peter Hermann (Davis Draper) and Julian Ovenden (Eric Burden) are also notable. Occasionally, Sex and the City was annoying. The storylines were tedious. The women were irritating. Thankfully, Cashmere Mafia is dissimilar. The women are entrancing. They are the treasures men adore.

Rodriguez Retorts: I’m History, You’re Ridiculous

Rich Rodriguez: “There seems to be a campaign to try to smear me. I haven't said anything until recently, when I felt I needed to defend all the false accusations. It has just gotten ridiculous over the last couple of days. There's so many inaccuracies and falsehood and innuendo, at some point, you get tired of getting beat up. It was that I erased academic files, then the next day, 'Oh no, that didn't happen.' The corrections are on page six and the lead story is on page one. There was an implication that I had all these secret files and I was throwing them away, but it's simply not true. I know there is disappointment and hard feelings because it's a small state and the program is a source of great pride, but this campaign is not helping West Virginia's program. You're trying to hurt Rich Rodriguez, but you're hurting West Virginia. I changed jobs. This is America, and sometimes you change jobs. I would hope that at some point when emotions cool down, that you can see the good things.”

NEW RULE

Provocative is effective.

On Friday, Golf Magazine fired Vice President and Editor Dave Seanor. Their decision was incorrect. Obviously, Golf Magazine’s cover was confrontational. However, Seanor’s imagery was appropriate. America needs a casual racism discussion. We need an overreaction discussion. Firing Seanor solves nothing.

Obviously, Kelly Tilghman’s comments were unintentional. They merit minimalism. They also warrant discussion. A discussion this cover should have spurred. Unfortunately, hatred and ignorance prevailed. Instead of a discussion, Seanor was sacrificed.

Epithets. Mailers. Racism. Rumors. Whispering campaigns. South Carolina’s legacy is disgusting and repugnant. Issues, speeches, and votes win elections. Perfectly Imprecise… Tigers Score Championship

Their season was imperfect. LSU’s campaign was not Michelangelo’s David. Crisp, sharp lines were not present. LSU’s campaign was impressionistic. Peppered with searing colors and occasional brilliance.

On Monday, the LSU Tigers defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes 38-24. They garnered their second BCS national championship. They concluded a scattered season. Versus Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tulane, and Virginia Tech, the Tigers dominated. Versus Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Tennessee, the Tigers escaped. Versus Arkansas and Kentucky, the Tigers succumbed. Two, triple overtime losses which should have compromised them.

Critics will condemn the Tigers. Pundits will excoriate them. Ultimately, the truth is unequivocal. Critics can write. Pundits can scream. Yet, two words are mandatory… national champions.

Joe Gibbs: Washington’s Saving Grace Exits

Joe Gibbs is an icon. Gibbs is a titan. He is a leader of men. He is a lion in winter. Gibbs’ age was irrelevant. He understood youth. He valued experience. He commanded respect. Gibbs was a throwback. Yet, he was modern. Gibbs was a singular blend, which will never be replicated.

On Wednesday, Gibbs resigned. He will remain as an adviser. However, his coaching and presidency tenures have concluded. “My family situation being what it is right now, I told him I couldn't make the kind of commitment I needed to make,” said Gibbs. “I hate to leave something unfinished. I made an original commitment of five years. I felt bad about that.”

According to Washington Redskins Owner Daniel Snyder, Gibbs warrants praise. “I give him all the credit for putting us in great position for the future,” Snyder said. “He's done a great job of stabilizing a situation that became unstable before, quite frankly.”

Despite Sean Taylor’s murder, the Redskins won their final four contests. En route to the playoffs, Washington defeated the Chicago Bears (24-16), the New York Giants (22-10), the Minnesota Vikings (32-21), and the Dallas Cowboys (27-6). Amidst this impressive streak, Quarterback Jason Campbell was injured. His replacement? Todd Collins. A non-starter for six years.

Overall, Gibbs logged a 171-101 ledger. He won Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. He captured four conference championships. He accrued six division titles. He secured ten playoff appearances. During his first incarnation, Gibbs amassed a 140-65 record. During his second incarnation, Gibbs totaled a 31-36 tablet.

Potential successors include Offensive Coordinator Al Saunders and Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams. According to Gibbs, one will inherit a contender. “I think we've got a lot of pieces in place,” Gibbs said. “I personally want to be a part of that. I want to see it finished. ... Our fans deserve championships. I want to be a part of seeing that come to fruition.”

Gibbs’ second term was not a failure. Yes, his record declined. His success diminished. However, Gibbs’ legacy remains untarnished. Facing abysmal circumstances, Gibbs led the Redskins. He rallied the Redskins. He personified leadership. He salvaged a franchise, their season, and himself.

Iowa Hearts Huckabee, Launches Obama

Three hundred and sixty eight days. 8,832 hours. 529,920 minutes. 3,1795,200 seconds. Questions. Answers. Handshakes. House parties. Town hall meetings. Photo opportunities. Smiles. Squirms. No votes were cast. Nothing counted.

On January 3, Senator Barack Obama won the Iowa Democratic Caucus. Simultaneously, Governor Mike Huckabee won the Iowa Republican Caucus. Obama (38%) defeated former Senator John Edwards (30%), Senator Hillary Clinton (29%), and Governor Bill Richardson (2%). Huckabee (34%) mauled Governor Mitt Romney (25%), former Senator Fred Thompson (13%), and Senator John McCain (13%).

During his victory speech, Obama was electric. “This was the moment when the improbable beat what Washington always said was inevitable,” he said. “This was the moment when we tore down barriers that have divided us for too long; when we rallied people of all parties and ages to a common cause; when we finally gave Americans who have never participated in politics a reason to stand up and to do so.”

Meanwhile, Huckabee espoused populism. “I think we've learned three very important things through this victory tonight,” Huckabee said. “The first thing we've learned is that people really are more important than the purse, and what a great lesson for America to learn. Most of the pundits believe that when you're outspent at least 15 to 1, it's simply impossible to overcome that mountain of money and somehow garner the level of support that's necessary to win an election. Well, tonight we proved that American politics still is in the hands of ordinary folks like you and across this country who believe that it wasn't about who raised the most money but who raised the greatest hopes, dreams and aspirations for our children and their future. “

Clinton’s collapse was immense. Obama garnered men (35-23), women (35-30), 17-29 year olds, (57-11), 30-44 year olds (42-23), single women (36-25), caucasians (33-27), and $100,000-plus earners (41-19). Amidst her defeat, Clinton eyed New Hampshire. “What is most important now is that, as we go on with this contest, that we keep focused on the two big issues, that we answer correctly the questions that each of us has posed,” she said. “How will we win in November 2008, by nominating a candidate who will be able to go the distance? And who will be the best president on day one? I am ready for that contest.”

Senators Joe Biden and Chris Dodd renounced their presidential campaigns. “I count the past year as one of the most rewarding in a career of public service,” Dodd said. “Unfortunately I am withdrawing from the campaign today.”

Perfectly, Sarah Bareilles’ lyrics frame this evening. For Clinton, Edwards, and Romney, Iowa did not write them a love song. They requested one. They needed one. Yet, their heart was not present. Iowa rejected them.

Line of the Morning

Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY)

“Dr. King understood, that there has to be a coming to terms of our country politically in order to make the changes that would last for generations beyond the iconic, extraordinary speeches that he gave. That's why he campaigned for Lyndon Johnson in 1964. That's why he was there when those great pieces of legislation were passed. Does he deserve the lion's share of the credit for moving our country and moving our political process? Yes, he does. But he also had partners who were in the political system.”

SMU Seeks Savior, Scores Jones

Relocation is intriguing. Relocation is inviting. Humans crave challenge. We desire difficulty. We seek obstacles. We may compliment familiarity. However, our happiness is a façade. Within our heart, we implore bleaker circumstances.

On January 5, Hawaii Coach June Jones resigned. On Monday, SMU hired him. According to Jones, the relocation was necessary. “There's absolutely no comparison,” Jones said. “At Hawaii, the office that I sat in was the same office that Dick Tomey sat in in 1986. The carpet was the same ... You're talking about the NFL and a Pop Warner team.”

During his Hawaii tenure, Jones logged a 76-41 ledger. In 2007, he accrued 12-1 record. Unfortunately, Hawaii’s conclusion proved disastrous. In the Sugar Bowl, Georgia defeated them 41-10. “No matter what he ever did or no matter how much he won he wasn't going to have the right money or facilities,” said Hawaii Quarterback Colt Brennan. “I'm sad to see him go but after just having experienced the Sugar Bowl I understand how this is a business.”

Overall, Jones has amassed a 98-77 record. With the Atlanta Falcons, he chalked a 19-29 chart. With the San Diego Chargers, he went 3-7. “Hawaii will always be my home,” Jones said. “The opportunity here surpasses everything ... I just really believe this is the time for me to move on.”

From 1980-1986, SMU scored a 61-19-1 record. They were a behemoth. Since, they have recorded one winning season. Jones may improve SMU. He may not. However, the desolation will challenge him. An incredible challenge which he provoked.

NEW RULE

New rules are mandatory.

Tonight, “Real Time with Bill Maher” will return. Unfortunately, “New Rules” will not. Due to the Writer’s Guild of America strike, Maher has sacrificed scripted material. Seriously? New Rules are critical. New Rules are imperative. Obviously, HBO owns Maher. However, new rules climax his program. Sans them, where would I be?
