Welcome to Reality

Democratic majority mistreating Republicans?

Two observations.

(1) What did you expect?

(2) Stop whining and win the majority.

Generation Next

A Verbal Catastrophe

"So we have a crisis of confidence in the Middle East — in the world, really. I've never seen our country as isolated, as much as a sort of international pariah for a number of reasons as it is today."

Senator, you’re not running for President.

SHUT UP!

You Can’t Teach…

A New York teacher began class by having students draw male genitalia. The teacher has been suspend and will likely be fired.

People, this occurred in health class. Stop overreacting.

Condemned Captures Championship

This was the match. Three years earlier, their roles were reversed. Serena Williams was the world’s number one. Maria Sharapova was the unimaginable finalist. On Wimbledon’s hallowed grass, Sharapova destroyed Williams. She overwhelmed and overpowered Williams I an upset which altered both careers.

This year, Sharapova was cast as dominant. While unequal to Williams’ myth, she had succeeded Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis, and the Russian contingent. Williams could not win. Her knee had taken a year. She was injured, inconsistent, and irrelevant. Even I was pronouncing her demise.

On Friday, Williams won the Australian Open. She exceeded winning. She blistered Sharapova, allowing her only three game victories. She showcased her athleticism and strength. She reminded why she was an impending legend. Her ninth grand slam championship may not be her greatest. However, this championship was her most improbable.

While one should cheer Williams, this is not three seasons ago. Sharapova is not merely a happy finalist. She deserves the same court and headlines as Williams. Serena will never be as she was. She may not even have returned. This victory could be an aberration. One final flash of the brilliance which was her hallmark.

Her future status is unknown. She is not irrelevant. She is not immortal. We may not know William’s ultimate standing until this summer. With that stated, everyone, including myself, can recite her current standing… Australian Open champion.

No Salvation For Slaughter

They were depraved and sadistic. Their scourge began with burglary and vandalism. They continued by capturing a puppy. The dog was ninety days old. They beat the dog. They taped his paws to his snout. The murderers then cooked the canine in an oven. On Friday, killers Justin and Joshua Moulder plead guilty to animal cruelty and related charges.

Anyone who believes people should not be imprisoned for animal killing; reread the initial paragraph. I want you to picture that suffering dog. I want you to imagine how he felt. I want you to hold your dog and ponder someone enacting cruelty upon them. The violence and horror of this crime is unbelievable and unforgivable.

Justin and Joshua should not be sentenced to months. They should serve decades. Their actions were despicable. They deserve neither freedom nor forgiveness. I hope they rot in hell.

Will They Sell?

This Is Debatable?

These women are razor thin and your deliberating?

Simple solution. Make them start eating or stop modeling.

Kill the Rabbit

Three girls have been charged with conspiracy to commit criminal homicide. Their “hit list” was found in a classroom garbage can.

I understand the state of America’s schools. However, the hit list included Oprah Winfrey, Tom Cruise, and the Energizer Bunny. This should serve as an indication that the teenagers were simply ranting.

God Road Trip A Great Film

On Monday, HBO aired “Friends of God.” Directed by Alexandra Pelosi, I was nervous as to the tone the film would assume. The film was outstanding. Presented without editorial comment, the documentary was an accurate depiction of the evangelical movement.

Crisscrossing the nation, the film showcased mega churches, music, comedy, and the Christian Wrestling Federation. Pelosi also interviewed several evangelic leaders, including Jerry Falwell and Ted Haggard. Upon conclusion, one truly has an appreciation for evangelicals’ technique.

Pelosi has proven herself as a director. “Friends of God” is worth more than the one-hour duration.

Who They Are

Dale Earnhardt defined an era. He won seven championships and revolutionized the marketing and perception of his sport. Dale Earnhardt Jr. (junior) is second generation. He has received credit, fame, and notoriety; earned nothing, and won small. Teresa Earnhardt is the woman guiding the man. She was not a racing enthusiast. She was a calculating business personality. Kevin Harvick is happenstance. He simply replaced Earnhardt upon his death.

Two weeks ago, Teresa questioned Junior’s commitment. "Right now the ball's in his court to decide on whether he wants to be a NASCAR driver or whether he wants to be a public personality," she said.

Teresa’s assertion is valid. Junior has won only seventeen races. He has never garnered a championship. He was not rookie of the year. He has partied with rock bands and appeared in movies. He also hosts his own satellite radio show. Junior is Peyton Manning. He transcends the sport which has provided his recognition. Does this transcendence allow a champion’s focus?

Facing criticism from his stepmother and owner, Junior recoiled and retaliated. "Well, I don't want to really get too personal, but Teresa is my stepmother, and I have a mother at home that I have a very good relationship with," he said. "Mine and Teresa's relationship has always been very black and white, very strict and in your face. ... It ain't a bed of roses. ... I don't know how to explain it, honestly."

Teresa was promotion and capitalization. She married a struggling driver who had not won. She transformed his career, converted his image, and molded his legacy. Rarely was she seen trackside. Never was she seen in the garage. Racing was not her passion. Racing was her enterprise. Dale Earnhardt’s livelihood was racing. Teresa’s was cashing a check. Dale was not a seven-time champion in her eyes, he was a cash register. She simply rang the bell and took the money.

Sensing discord, Harvick cockily spoke. "It's hard when you have what I call a deadbeat owner that doesn't come to the racetrack,” he said. “You have to be at the racetrack and you have to play the politics of the sport and you have to be a part of your team and you have to understand what's going on."

Harvick inherited a championship ride. However, his team has regressed. They have won few races. They have won no titles. Harvick has been suspended for rough driving. He openly flirted with Toyota. He publicly threatened his owner icon. Everyday, Harvick walks past a statue of Dale Earnhardt. He is not Earnhardt. He has not earned the right to criticize. He deserves criticism.

This story is vast and complicated. The personalities and comments have been public. The psychology has been private. Two weeks ago, a businesswoman challenged a dilettante athlete. The athlete responded and his rival walked into an open conflict. The egos may never be squelched. The crisis may never be resolved. One lone fact is certain. These three persons were themselves prior to Dale Earnhardt’s death. Their current personalities merely were not visible.

Pentagon’s Iraq options:

Those would be the choices.

President requests $7 billion for war.

Let the games begin.

Sleazy Spencer & Sloppy Seconds

For the second consecutive week, the Hills sizzled. However, this episode produced more questions than answers.

Spencer’s arrogance is nauseating. Answering the phone with “what a pleasant little surprise” and “look who it is, my favorite person in the world.” You are cheating on someone with her friend and lying to both. Heidi should realize you are a parasite and drop you permanently.

Unfortunately, she has not. After Spencer became upset with her during their pregnancy discussion (she is not), Heidi gave him another chance. She closed the episode meeting him for dinner. Speaking of that meal, Spencer asked Audrina out. Thankfully and correctly, Audrina passed. She also hung up on him. Audrina has realized Spencer is scum. Why not Heidi?

Lauren went on her first date since Jason. Unfortunately, she dined with Spencer’s friend and Kristin’s ex-boyfriend Brody Jenner. While their date was pleasant and Brody was sweet, I have two questions. Will Brody ever be more than the son of an Olympian who dates Laguna Beach stars? Is Lauren aware that she is snacking on Kristin’s sloppy seconds?

Dream Location, Nightmare Show

Simply stated, Maui Fever is horrendous. Whereas Laguna Beach depicted beautiful people in sun drenched perfection, Maui Fever chronicles unsightly losers drinking from paper cups. When they are not scamming sex from tourists, they are discussing sex. Their behavior is infantile and pathetic. Despite the tropical location, Maui Fever is a documentary about letches.

MTV hailed Chaunte as another Kristin Cavallari. Kristin was gorgeous, manipulative, and a villain one could cheer. Chaunte is odd looking, whiney, and without redeeming qualities. She does not play men against each other. She sluts them into fighting each other. Finally, Kristin cruised Laguna Beach in a BMW. Chaunte drives a truck rednecks would adore.

Co-producers Liz Gately and Tony Disanto choked hard. Following their Laguna Beach success (Gately created), they attempted replication. They failed miserably. Their cast lacks interesting characters. Their cast’s activities are more suited for small town high school environments. Sitting around talking, drinking beer from plastic cups? Awakening in a garage on a Nirvana-era couch? Horrid.

MTV has enjoyed success with reality television. They have created scintillating backgrounds and compelling characters. Maui Fever is amateur and wretched. The program does not possess one viewable quality. I recommend no one watch.

Unwanted Inheritance

According to a PHD, Presidential dynasties are bad because, “they involve the same people, deplete the pool of resources, and do not afford the political capitol necessary to solve problems.”

Interesting theory.

Engaged Showcases Promise

Despite a difficult subject, MTV’s Engaged and Underaged has potential. Featuring assorted couples, the program depicts the conception and realization of a wedding. Engaged also chronicles the tribulations of the couple, their families, and their circumstances.

Initially, Engaged profiled David and Lauren. Both were virgins as per their faith and David is the classic mother’s son. He even described his honeymoon bed to her. The show’s depiction of their dynamic and parental skirmishes was outstanding. Engaged also provided the audience with enough of a back-story.

Engaged is not polished. The show is overly crammed. The show also included trivial behind the scenes moments. However, the show deals with a troubled institution. Given the nation’s divorce rate, Engaged presents relevant questions. Compared with Maui Fever, this is intriguing television.

Did Anyone See This?

The National Hockey League possesses shimmering young talent. However, their All-Star game was televised on Versus.

Simply stated, the NHL is a complete joke.

Kerry Not A Candidate

Senator John Kerry is not running for President. He has watched Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Edwards announce. Facing formidable opposition with apathetic support, Kerry set aside his ego and scrapped his candidacy. For this decision, Senator Kerry should be commended.

Their Dream Is Dead

Their agenda was pronounced. The unaccomplished results were treated as chiseled stone. Democrats’ initial one hundred hours would be spectacular. They would elevate the middle class. They would transform America. Upon their arrival in Washington, house Democrats paraded six initiatives through votes. All passed. Their ascendancy into law was certain.

On Wednesday, their minimum wage increase stalled. Mired in tax dissention, the two dollar raise became subject to squabble. Democrats blamed Republicans obsessed with small business. Republicans blamed Democrats intent of plundering small business. While the issue could be saved, the fundamental truth of their one hundred hours has been illustrated.

100 hours” was an insincere ploy. Facing a Republican President and narrow Congressional margins, the agenda appeared questionable at the outset. Following Wednesday’s setback, the program has been exposed. These promises were a combination of blind hope and articulate words. A Democratic Contract with America.

Political promises are not unique. They are a prerequisite. With that stated, failure is the result of heightened expectations. For seven months, one hundred hours pledged hope and revolution. No one should be surprised that the Democrats are failing.

Disbar Nifong

He pandered to win reelection. He exploited repugnant fears. He rejected exculpatory evidence. He ruined three lives. He ignored reality for bellicose and deceitful statements. Following his November victory, he hid. He pathetically slunk into the background, while the accused twisted.

On Wednesday, the North Carolina Bar Association filed charges against Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong. Their accusations state Nifong withheld evidence from the defense and lied to both the court and bar investigators.

Nifong is simply wretched. He should be disbarred. He should face criminal charges. He manipulated class and racial stereotypes for personal achievement. He is a miserable human being. Politicians and attorneys may massage the truth into their parameters. Nifong exceeded this practice. He invented his own reality. He proceeded without conscience. His actions fractured the criminal justice system.

Three collegians are now pariahs. A university is tarnished. A city has been forced to reexamine the scar tissue of two centuries. The available punishments are inadequate for Nifong’s horrific actions. Unfortunately, they are all that exists.

Oscar Nominations

These are my rapid impressions. Shocked Dream Girls was not nominated for best picture. Thrilled for Martin Scorsese. Everyone should vote for him (sorry Clint Eastwood). Everyone should also vote for Forrest Whitaker (sorry for Leo). Sentimental favorite is Meryl Streep. Everyone please stop praising Al Gore.

Bubble, Bubble, Talk, & Start Trouble

Vice President Cheney served the President “a witches brew” of bad advice.

Senator McCain… It’s 2008.

State of the Union Reaction – Morning Show Edition

On Wednesday, three White House contenders responded to the State of the Union Address. CBS’s Early Show hosted John McCain. NBC’s Today Show aired Rudy Giuliani. Barack Obama appeared on all three networks. Giuliani and McCain supported the troop surge. McCain labeled the opportunity “a last chance.” Meanwhile, Obama panned the “escalation.”

Inevitably, presidential politics engulfed the conversation. Giuliani stated his mayoral experience qualified him. Obama retorted a story concerning his education. He also made CBS’s Harry Smith appear incredibly unprepared.

They Have Learned

Muhammad al-Ahmedawi: “Most of them [Iraqi Parliament members] were here for the game, for prestige, for the money.”

Iraq… Welcome to politics.

He Said What?

“As I look at Iraq, I recall the words of former general and soon-to-be President Dwight Eisenhower during the dark days of the Korean War, which had fallen into a bloody stalemate. "When comes the end?" asked the General who had commanded our forces in Europe during World War Two. And as soon as he became President, he brought the Korean War to an end.

These Presidents took the right kind of action, for the benefit of the American people and for the health of our relations around the world. Tonight we are calling on this President to take similar action, in both areas. If he does, we will join him. If he does not, we will be showing him the way.”

State of the Union Reaction – Volume 2

Americablog

I really think his speech got re-written at the last minute after they'd gotten so much heat for their announced plans to pretty much ignore Iraq tonight. Speaking of ignoring, what the hell happened to family values and the social conservatives. Did they get ANYTHING in the entire speech? Abortion, gone. Activist judges, gone. Gay marriage, gone. That's the sleeper shocker of this speech, the utter cleansing of anything that would appeal to the family values crowd. They have truly become the crazy aunt in the attic, to be hidden at all costs.

Andrew Sullivan (Time Blogs)

"Whatever you voted for, you didn't vote for failure." Damn right. But this president gave us failure. He failed in his task of basic competence and decency in the war. That is why the situation in the "here and now" is so grave. Because of his delinquency and arrogance. The American people are not stupid. And their approval rating simply reflects the reality they see.

Elocutio

What?? "Civilian Reserve Corps." Did somebody say "militia??" This is awesome. Where do I sign up??

Instapundit

Sum-up: Not bad, especially for Bush, who's no great shakes as a speaker. His recent speaking events have been weak even by his standards, but this was one of his better speeches. Will it help him? Not so clear. He seemed more comfortable and cheerful while working the crowd than he's seemed lately, too. [LATER: Charlie Gibson thinks the same thing.]

Vodka Pundit

"Foreign oil," blah blah blah, "technology," blah blah blah. Problem is, except for his mention of nuclear energy, not one item Bush mentioned will help outside the margins. And I'm sure the Democratic Congress will get right on approving those new nuke plants.

The War on Terror - take the fight to the enemy. A standing 'O' and number of whistles. Nancy really looks uncomfortable now.

State of the Union Reaction – Volume 1

Beltway Blogroll

Earmarks really irk President Bush. In his State of the Union speech, the president noted that special interest items are often stealthily slipped into bills "when not even C-SPAN is watching." As if C-SPAN could keep track. In 2005, the number of earmarks grew to more than 13,000 worth an estimated $1.8 billion. Bush said over 90 percent of the pork never makes it to the House or Senate floor. The language is tucked into committee reports "that are not even part of the bill that arrives on my desk," Bush bemoaned. "The time has come to end this practice."

Blogs For Bush

If you listened to the President on the War on Terrorism and are unwilling to give him at least six months in Iraq, then you are a mean spirited, hate filled, selfish ignoramous. This isn't Bush's war - this isn't the Republicans war: this is our war - America's war. George Bush won't lose the war, the United States will...and as President Bush said, whatever you voted for, you didn't vote for American defeat.

Captain’s Quarters

Tony Snow was right. Bush has spent almost as much time on this as he did on the domestic policy. Bush made a strong point when he told Congress, "Whatever you voted for, you did not vote for failure." He's trying bipartisanship by forming an "advisory committee" including members of both parties to help him in the war on terror.

Flynn Files

Bush wants a few good men. Okay, Okay, a few more than a few: 92,000 to be exact. Do we really need a larger military, or might America be better served by fewer commitments around the globe?

Mary Katherine Ham (Townhall.com):

9:22: Giving those stuck in failing schools the right to move somewhere else. This is the part of NCLB I actually like. Democrats: "More opportunity for minority students at the cost of angry teachers' unions? That cost is too high, Mr. President."

9:24: Tax deductions for those who want to buy their own insurance, level playing field for those who do not get it through their jobs. "This deduction would help put a basic, private health plan within their reach," he said of those without health care. Democrats: "More quality health care at reasonable prices for people without it at the cost of the great liberal dream of crappy, socialized health care for everyone? That cost is too high, Mr. President."

Powerline

I hadn't intended to watch the State of the Union speech tonight, but my wife tuned in part way through. In contrast to his "surge" speech a week or two ago, I thought President Bush was back on his game tonight. The speech was a reminder that it's a good thing to be President. When he offered a sentence about Iraq that ended with the word "victory," the Democrats had no alternative but to stand up and cheer.

Pittsburgh… You Want Your Team?

Pittsburgh is an excellent hockey town. The citizens have adored their stars. They have supported their squad. The Penguins rewarded them with consecutive Stanley Cup championships and numerous playoff appearances.

On Tuesday, Owner Mario Lemieux chastised his city. "I wasn't [at that meeting Thursday], but we were very disappointed. As always, we're going to go out and explore our options. When we get a deal that we like, we'll sign it. The sooner, the better, not only for us, but for the league. They need to know where this team is going to play next year. A few weeks ago, I said 30 days. I think we're getting close to that. Sooner or later, we're just going to make a decision and go with that."

Mellon Arena is forty-five years old. The Pittsburgh Pirates are a perennial loser. They have not won a championship since 1979. They have not won their division since 1992. In 2001, they opened PNC Park, a beautiful baseball facility. The Penguins last playoff appearance occurred six seasons ago. Why are they unworthy of a new arena?

The city had better get serious. Houston does not deserve hockey. Neither does Kansas City. Pittsburgh does. However, they are challenging their team’s loyalty. Loyalty is bilateral. This great hockey city must show loyalty.

Real Sports Scores

Half of Iowa high school lineman are overweight. One in ten are obese. This gargantuan size increases health risks. Their bulk also dramatically decreases life expectancy.

High school lineman heft is not an Iowa problem. The epidemic is national. Seeking the elusive college scholarship, teenagers exchange safety for snacking. They obtain their examples from Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, the vast majority never block beyond their senior season.

Initially, HBO’s Real Sports reported this plague. Their story, which this study confirmed, was another example of their journalistic excellence. Bryant Gumbel’s program is truly exceptional.

Wisconsin Company Defines Pathetic

On Tuesday, Fox News reported upon an exchange between a soldier and a Wisconsin mattress company. The soldier, stationed in Iraq, was requesting floor mats.

Soldier: "Do you ship to APO (military) addresses? I'm in the 1st Cavalry Division stationed in Iraq and we are trying to order some mats but we are looking for ships to APO first."

Discount Mats response: “We do not ship to APO addresses, and even if we did, we would NEVER ship to Iraq. If you were sensible, you and your troops would pull out of Iraq.”

One’s war position is irrelevant. Our soldiers deserve gratitude and appreciation. They are America’s finest and bravest. They do not deserve disrespect, contempt, or insolence. This website’s response was unforgivable. Their flippant reaction spit on the courage of thousands of America’s heroes.

This website should be ashamed. They should also be out of business. Their response was not dissent. Their retort was pathetic. It was unworthy of an American company.

HISTORY

Nine For Nine

Examining the Cincinnati Bengals roster:

State of the Union Exerpts

The American people expect their elected leaders from both parties to work together on the important issues facing the Nation. Tonight the President will lay out an ambitious agenda, driven by bold and innovative concepts. He will discuss the importance of forging common ground with the new Congress and explain that to keep America safe, we must prevail in the war on terror.

"Some in this Chamber are new to the House and Senate – and I congratulate the Democratic majority. Congress has changed, but our responsibilities have not…We are not the first to come here with government divided and uncertainty in the air. Like many before us, we can work through our differences, and achieve big things for the American people."

"Our citizens don't much care which side of the aisle we sit on – as long as we are willing to cross that aisle when there is work to be done. Our job is to make life better for our fellow Americans, and help them to build a future of hope and opportunity – and this is the business before us tonight."

On our growing economy:

"A future of hope and opportunity begins with a growing economy – and that is what we have…Unemployment is low, inflation is low, and wages are rising. This economy is on the move – and our job is to keep it that way, not with more government but with more enterprise."
On the importance of strengthening and re-authorizing No Child Left Behind this year:

"Five years ago, we rose above partisan differences to pass the No Child Left Behind Act…And because we acted, students are performing better in reading and math, and minority students are closing the achievement gap."

"Now the task is to build on this success, without watering down standards .... without taking control from local communities ... and without backsliding and calling it reform…And we can make sure our children are prepared for the jobs of the future, and our country is more competitive, by strengthening math and science skills."

On the President's new health care initiatives:

"[I]n all we do, we must remember that the best healthcare decisions are made not by government and insurance companies, but by patients and their doctors."
On comprehensive immigration reform:

"Extending hope and opportunity in our country requires an immigration system worthy of America – with laws that are fair and borders that are secure. When laws and borders are routinely violated, this harms the interests of our country… Yet…we cannot fully secure the border unless we take pressure off the border – and that requires a temporary worker program."

On strengthening America's energy security:

"Extending hope and opportunity depends on a stable supply of energy that keeps America's economy running and America's environment clean. For too long our Nation has been dependent on foreign oil. And this dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes, and to terrorists – who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments ... raise the price of oil .... and do great harm to our economy. It is in our vital interest to diversify America's energy supply – and the way forward is through technology."

On the war on terror:

"For all of us in this room, there is no higher responsibility than to protect the people of this country from danger…[T]o win the war on terror we must take the fight to the enemy. From the start, America and our allies have protected our people by staying on the offense. The enemy knows that the days of comfortable sanctuary, easy movement, steady financing, and free flowing communications are long over. For the terrorists, life since Nine-Eleven has never been the same."

"[O]ur military commanders and I have carefully weighed the options. We discussed every possible approach. In the end, I chose this course of action because it provides the best chance of success. Many in this chamber understand that America must not fail in Iraq – because you understand that the consequences of failure would be grievous and far reaching."

"The war on terror we fight today is a generational struggle that will continue long after you and I have turned our duties over to others. That is why it is important to work together so our Nation can see this great effort through."

"Both parties and both branches should work in close consultation. And this is why I propose to establish a special advisory council on the war on terror, made up of leaders in Congress from both political parties. We will share ideas for how to position America to meet every challenge that confronts us. And we will show our enemies abroad that we are united in the goal of victory."

On American foreign policy:

"American foreign policy is more than a matter of war and diplomacy. Our work in the world is also based on a timeless truth: To whom much is given, much is required. We hear the call to take on the challenges of hunger, poverty, and disease – and that is precisely what America is doing. We must continue to fight HIV/AIDS, especially on the continent of Africa."

Parcells Done

I was shocked.

On Monday, Dallas Cowboys Coach Bill Parcells announced his resignation. Following nineteen seasons, Parcells retires with a 183-138-1 record and two Super Bowl championships. He exited with anonymity and grace, befitting his status as one of the NFL’s legendary coaches.

Fifteen days ago, he appeared worn. The Cowboys collapsed and forfeited a division championship. Dallas then suffered a debilitating playoff loss. Parcells also endured an entire season of Terrell Owens. His practice habits, his media tirades, his mental abuse, his suicide attempt, and his self-absorption.

Despite this drain and drama, his return was anticipated. He was excited about his new quarterback. His career could not end with heartbreak. Parcells was a competitor. He would return for 2007. We were all incorrect. Sunday was Parcells final, silent twenty-four hours as coach.

Predictably, Owens crowed. “I am just hoping his retirement brings promise to what the team has to offer,” Owens said. “This past year was a big letdown. On paper we were as good as anybody we played against every week. The end result didn’t show that. Our play was not indicative of what we could have done. What we should have done. Hopefully, the owner will hire a coach to take the team to the next level.”

Parcells led four teams into the playoffs. His squads appeared in three Super Bowls and accumulated eleven wins. Owens’ next Super Bowl championship will be his first. We will never know the complete Owens-Parcells saga. I am unsure that I want to. I know a proud coach was forced to spend his final season with an oversized adolescent. If the Cowboys retain Owens sans Parcells, the injustice will be gargantuan.

Dallas is not America’s team. They have not been worthy of that distinction since Jimmy Johnson departed. Now, as America’s coach exits, we must examine the Cowboys for what they are… a collection of egos lacking a defining winner.

A Time For Rape?

This week, the movie “Hounddog” will be released. Starring Dakota Fanning, the film is set in 1950. The feature’s plot points include a girl gyrating in her underwear, a naked father climbing into bed as his daughter awakens, an exposure demand for a kiss, and the graphic rape of the twelve-year-old star.

While this synopsis is shocking, Fanning’s retort to critics is disturbing. “You know, I’m an actress,” she said. “It’s what I want to do, it’s what I’ve been so lucky to have done for almost seven years now. And I am getting older. February 23 is my birthday, I’ll be 13 years old. And I will be playing different kinds of roles. I won’t be able to do the things I did when I was 6 years old when I’m 14. And that’s what I look forward to — getting to play new roles that aren’t too old for me and aren’t too young for me, that are just at the right time.”

Occasionally, stars espouse vile. This is horrific. There is no time for rape. The graphic rape of a thirty-year-old may allow women to relate a life experience. The graphic rape of a pre-teenage is sick, twisted, and disgusting. Fanning’s statement is unforgivable. Acting is acting. Hollywood’s complete disregard of morality is expected. This twelve-year-old’s defense of her actions is deplorable.

Fanning is maturing. She must attempt new roles. She should explore her talent and test herself. However, this role entailed excrement. Her justification was repugnant. There is no age for graphic rape.

Way to Go Steelers

Leadership requires action. Dan Rooney helped craft the NFL’s minority hiring policy. His policy created more interview opportunities. The aforesaid were accomplishments. With that stated, talking minority hiring is hollow. His stance required true validation.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin. Stating Tomlin is the Steelers’ first African-American coach is insulting. He is only the sixth in NFL history. However, he was hired by someone who proposed minority hiring, preached minority hiring, and proceeded to hire a minority.

Tomlin may fail. Following three stable decades, he may be an incorrect hire. However, I applaud the Steelers for his hire. They have done more than address a controversial subject. They have showcased the courage of their historic convictions.

Mike, Mistakes, Monkeys, & the Morning Show

This morning, ESPN radio’s Mike Greenberg asserted that the pre-Championship of criticism of Rex Grossman and Peyton Manning was not unwarranted. He is slightly incorrect. Prior to his victory, Manning was chided as incapable of winning the big game. Prior to his victory, Grossman was lamented as unstable. On Sunday, both shattered those stereotypes, thereby shedding caricatures which were ridiculously unfair.

Both Greenberg and co-host Mike Golic also said Reggie Bush’s celebration inspired the Chicago Bears’ defense. This opinion is provably false. Trailing 16-14, the New Orleans Saints maneuvered into Chicago territory. Only a drop and an incompletion halted their momentum. Four turnovers and no running game doomed the Saints. Not Bush.

Despite these misstatements, the Mike & Mike Show featured a brilliant piece of production. The piece, which concerned a monkey leaving Peyton Manning’s back, concluded with “I could go to Eli, but that’s not fair. So I guess I’ll just go home and spank myself.”

Working Your Tax Dollars

From the Louisville Courier-Journal:
As baby boomers age and perhaps lose the ability or inclination to drive, the Transit Authority of River City is hoping to give them a lift.

Because some of those people have never used public transit, TARC has developed a "travel-training" program.

TARC and the local chapter of AARP have created a 12-minute video at a cost of $20,000. It covers how to get on and off a bus, where to sit, how to transfer and how to read schedules.
When attempting a new activity, instruction is important.

There is a method for stepping onto a bus? You wait for the doors to open and ascend two steps. You sit where space is available. If you cannot read by age 65, a video will not help.

Here Me Now, Believe Me Later

Following the Chicago Bears victory, this was WBBM’s radio call.

Confused? The vast majority of initial reactions are either shock or disbelief.

This is why Jeff Joniak’s statement was brilliant.

California Diluted

California’s proposed spanking ban is ridiculous. It is asinine. Previously, I voiced my opposition. I was prepared to dismiss the ban and any “merits” as stupid.

On Monday, the Today Show interviewed California legislator and bill sponsor Sally Lieber. “Where we are on spanking is where we were on domestic violence twenty years ago,” she said.

Seriously, was spanking equated with domestic violence? This legislator is irrational. Spanking is a personal choice. I would never if I had children. However, the intent of spanking is discipline. Domestic violence is a societal plague. Domestic violence serves no purpose. The intent of domestic violence is to harm and maim. The act of a person, who is so insecure as to translate their inferiority into beating someone, cannot be compared with two whacks on a toddler.

Assemblywoman Lieber, your argument is irrational. Your argument also trivializes the suffering of all domestic violence victims. For this, you should be ashamed.

Pillow Fight Dream

I was not commenting on this…

However… “Guys respect this as a sport,” one pillow fighter said. “They see that we are competing and they don’t view this or us sexually.”
Keep thinking that…

Finally!

You expected heartbreak. Despite leading with one minute remaining, you expected Peyton Manning to lose. This year, his Indianapolis Colts were a regular season underachiever. They won two playoff contests with defense. Finally, their vaunted rival the New England Patriots, were the visiting team. The stars seemed aligned. Still, you expected Manning to lose.

He did not. Manning, the NFL’s greatest player, has won a conference championship. He will play in a Super Bowl.

Manning’s story is not unique. Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, and Donovan McNabb have never won a championship. However, they had started a Super Bowl. Their story also differs from Manning’s in another fact. One which made Manning’s inability to win a conference a tragic story. Potentially, Manning is the best quarterback ever. The greatest quarterback ever could not even achieve the Super Bowl. Until Sunday…

On February 4, Manning will start a Super Bowl. He many not win. At least, he will play.

Will Chicago Accept Rex?

Rex Grossman has been walking funny. The reason? For the vast majority of this season, he has had the city of Chicago crammed into his rear end.

This season, Grossman compiled 3,193 yards and 23 touchdowns. He recorded nine games of two hundred yards passing, nine games with more touchdowns than interceptions, and seven games where his passer rating exceeded one hundred. This final statistic equaled Peyton Manning’s production. Grossman only trailed Drew Brees and Tom Brady’s two-hundred yardage statistic by one. Manning, Brees, and Brady’s touchdown to interception games exceeded his by only one. Grossman led the Bears to the NFC’s best record.

Chicago has loved their quarterbacks. They cheered the flamboyant tenacity of Jim McMahon. They reveled in the rugged grittiness of Jim Miller. Why has Chicago refused to embrace Grossman? He strides with the confidence and bravado of McMahon. He is a gunslinger akin to Michael Jordan. He has the All-American persona of Ryne Sandberg.

Yet, Chicago has metaphorically spit on him. They have booed him. They have asked for his replacement. They have campaigned for his replacement. Despite his winning and statistics, which as stated, compare favorably with his colleagues, Chicago has rebuked him. Why?

Brian Griese is a perennial playoff loser. Grossman is a first round selection, who possesses the talent and mental toughness required to win. He has won two playoff contests. He has beaten the defending conference champions. He has beaten the New Orleans Saints, who everyone thought would win.

On Sunday, Grossman won the Bears’ most important game in twenty-one seasons. Maybe now, the city of Chicago will leave him alone.
