Washington What Side?

Vice Presidents are disciplined. Vice Presidents are regimented. They enumerate constricted cases. They recite convenient criticisms. They are not independent. They are not opinionated. They are never the news. Joe Biden contrasts this.

For Vice President, Senator Barack Obama selected Biden. According to Obama, Biden is exceptional. “Joe Biden is that rare mix — for decades, he has brought change to Washington, but Washington hasn't changed him,” said Obama. “He's an expert on foreign policy whose heart and values are rooted firmly in the middle class. He has stared down dictators and spoken out for America's cops and firefighters. He is uniquely suited to be my partner as we work to put our country back on track.”

According to Biden, Obama is extraordinary. “Ladies and gentlemen, no one knows better than I do that presidential campaigns are crucibles in which you're tested and challenged every single day,” said Biden. “And over the past 18 months, I've watched Barack meet those challenges with judgment, intelligence, and steel in his spine. I've watched as he's inspired millions of Americans, millions of Americans to this new cause. And folks, campaigns for presidents are a test of character and leadership. And in this campaign, one candidate, one candidate has passed that test.”

Since 1972, Biden has been a United States Senator. He has served as Foreign Relations and Judiciary Committee Chairman. He has also served as International Narcotics Control Caucus Co-Chairman.

“Joe won't just make a good vice president — he will make a great one,” said Obama. “After decades of steady work across the aisle, I know he'll be able to help me turn the page on the ugly partisanship in Washington, so we can bring Democrats and Republicans together to pass an agenda that works for the American people. I have seen this man work. I have sat with him as he chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and been by his side on the campaign trail. And I can tell you that Joe Biden gets it. He's that unique public servant who is at home in a bar in Cedar Rapids and the corridors of the Capitol; in the VFW hall in Concord, and at the center of an international crisis.”

In 1972, Biden endured tragedy. Neilia and Naomi, his wife and daughter, were killed. Beau and Robert, his sons, were seriously injured. Biden considered resignation. However, he reevaluated. He commingled career and children. “Tragedy tests us — it tests our fortitude and it tests our faith,” said Obama. “Here's how Joe Biden responded. He never moved to Washington. Instead, night after night, week after week, year after year, he returned home to Wilmington on a lonely Amtrak train when his Senate business was done. He raised his boys…”

With his closing salvo, Biden encapsulated the election. “Ladies and gentlemen, this is no ordinary time. This is no ordinary election. And this may be our last chance to reclaim the America we love, to restore America's soul.”

On February 11, 2007, Obama announced his presidential candidacy. His mantra was change. His exhortation? Washington is wrecked. Biden is a thirty-six year congressperson. Obviously, he is experienced. He possesses international expertise. However, Obama’s principal message is alteration. Biden contradicts this.

Quoting the Establishment

On Saturday, Brazil defeated the United States 25-18, 18-25, 25-13, 25-21. During the Olympics, America advanced via courage, resolve, and tenacity. Tonight, Brazil was simply superior. America’s accomplishment cannot be understated. In volleyball, this was merely their third medal.

Soccer (Men’s): Argentina defeated Nigeria 1-0. With their victory, Argentina garnered their second consecutive gold medal.

San Francisco Trash

On Friday, the San Francisco 49ers chose a quarterback. J.T. O’Sullivan is their starter. San Francisco’s decision is intriguing. In 2005, Alex Smith was selected first. Predictably, he was ineffective and weak. His statistics never equaled expectations. O’Sullivan is not an improvement. However, Smith must be shed.

In the men’s four man, four hundred meter relay, Jamaica set the world record. Trinidad and Tobago scored silver. Japan bagged bronze. Jamaica was never challenged. Usain Bolt, Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, and Asafa Powell… you are incredible.

In the women’s four woman, eight hundred meter relay, Russia garnered gold. Belgium scored silver. Nigeria bagged bronze. Jamaica was disqualified. During the 2008 Olympics, Jamaica has shimmered. On Friday, the Boston Celtics signed Darius Miles. This transaction is intriguing. Miles possesses talent. Unfortunately, his statistics have never equaled expectations. If Miles can revive, he is a steal.

Beijing 2008: Olympics Control Center

Basketball (Men’s): In the semi-finals, the United States defeated Argentina 101-81. Spain defeated Lithuania 91-86. For America, one contest remaining...

NEW RULE

Elections are won.

On Thursday, Diebold stated the assumed. Since 2006, one thousand votes were not counted. One thousand votes? America has fifty states. Predictably, Democrats are elated. Diebold is fraudulent. This proves treachery. One thousand votes are simply the commencement. May I state the obvious? Electronic voting is imperfect. Punch cards were also imperfect.

Paranoia is nauseating. In 2000 and 2004, Republicans did not steal. Republicans won. In 1992 and 1996, Democrats won. Do Republicans criticize those victories? No. They criticize Ross Perot. Allegedly, Bush vs. Gore polarized our nation. Actually, Bush vs. Gore traumatized our nation. We now assume corruption. We now mistrust voting. This is disheartening. I hope this subsides. I hope we realize… Republicans do not steal elections. Akin to President Kennedy, we merely purchase them.

American Agony Dresses Softball’s Sendoff

On Thursday, Japan defeated the United States 3-1. In the third inning, Eri Yamada hammered a home run. In the fourth, Japan and the United States swapped scores. In the seventh, Japan utilized an error. They scored again. They garnered gold. Japan shocked America. They stunned softball. They traumatized an epitaph.

In the Olympics, America’s accomplishments were prodigious. Three consecutive gold medals. Twenty-two consecutive victories. Their overall record was 32-5. They outscored their opponents 175-21.

Catastrophes are not conclusions. Failures are not farewells. Calamities are not cherished. Serenity is not sour. Villains are not cheered. Heroes are not jeered. Today was a nightmare. Today was repulsive. They fairytale was annihilated, crushed, and razed. This is unacceptable. The International Olympic Committee must reverse themselves. Immediately, softball must be reinstated.

On Thursday, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers defeated Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes 23-21, 17-21, 15-4. With their victory, Dalhausser and Rogers scored their second consecutive gold medal.

Dalhausser and Rogers were magnificent. They were marvelous. Everyday, they commanded the court. They showcased their skills. They won. Another terrific tandem simply overshadowed them. Obviously, Misty May and Kerri Walsh were superb. However, Dalhausser and Rogers were comparable.

In the men’s four hundred meters, LaShawn Merritt garnered gold. Jeremy Wariner scored silver. David Neville bagged bronze. The competitors merit praise. However, they cannot erase earlier catastrophes.

A Convoluted Legacy

Gene Upshaw
(1945-2008)

Dan Wetzel: Jacques Rogge is A Coward

Jacques Rogge is so bought, so compromised, the president of the IOC doesn’t have the courage to criticize China for telling a decade of lies to land itself these Olympic Games. All the promises made to get these Games — on Tibet, Darfur, pollution, worker safety, freedom of expression, dissident rights — turned out to be phony, perhaps as phony as the Chinese gymnasts’ birthdates Rogge was way too slow to investigate.

One of the most powerful men in sports turned the world away from his complicity. Instead, he has flexed his muscles by unloading on a powerless sprinter from a small island nation. Rogge’s ripping of Usain Bolt’s supposed showboating in two of the most electrifying gold-medal performances of these Games has to be one of the most ill-timed and gutless acts in the modern history of the Olympics.

“That’s not the way we perceive being a champion,” Rogge said of the Jamaican sprinter. “I have no problem with him doing a show. I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

Oh, this is richer than those bribes and kickbacks the IOC got caught taking. All the powerful nations — including the United States — have carte blanche at the Games. They can pout and preen, cheat, throw bean balls, file wild complaints, break promises that got them a host bid, whatever they want. They can take turns slapping Rogge and his cronies around like rag dolls as long as the dinner with a good wine list gets paid.

A single individual sprinter? Even if you don’t like his manner, that’s whom Rogge deems it necessary to attack, to issue a worldwide condemnation? “I understand the joy,” Rogge said. “He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man.”

Perceived by whom? Old fat cats making billions of Olympic dollars on the backs of athletes like Bolt for a century now? They get to define this? They get to lecture about learning? Bolt is everything the Olympics are supposed to be about. He isn’t the product of some rich country, some elaborate training program that churns out gold medals by any means necessary.

He’s a breath of fresh air, a guy who came out of nowhere to enrapture the world with his athletic performance and colorful personality. This is no dead-eye product of some massive machine. He was himself, and the world loved him for it. On his own force of will, Bolt has become the break-out star of these Games. He saved the post-Michael Phelps Olympics. It wasn’t so much his world-record times, but the flair, the fun.

No one at the track had a problem with this guy; they understood he is everything the sport needs to recover from an era of extreme doping. The Lightning Bolt made people care about track again, something that seemed impossible two weeks ago. “I don’t feel like he’s being disrespectful,” American Shawn Crawford told the Associated Press. “He deserves to dance.”

Apparently, Rogge would prefer 12-year-old gymnasts too frightened to crack a smile. It got better when, in the same press conference, he pretended to forget all the lies China told him to get this bid, all the troubles, all the challenges, and praised the host nation. Yes, these have been an exceptionally well-run Games from a tactical standpoint, and the Chinese people have displayed otherworldly kindness.

None of which denies the promises broken, the innocent jailed, the freedoms denied — the kind of issues someone with Jacques Rogge’s standing should be talking about. He has no spine for that. Not for China. Not for any big country. He had to criticize someone, he had to make headlines, he had to show he was a tough guy. So who better than someone from somewhere that can’t ever touch him back?

Yes, Usain Bolt is the problem of the Olympics. He’s the embarrassment. He’s the one who needs to learn. Sure, Jacques, sure.

Wilkinson Closes Career With Pain, Without Medal

In the women’s ten meter platform, Ruolin Chen garnered gold. Emilie Heymans scored silver. Xin Wang bagged bronze. Laura Wilkinson did not medal. Wilkinson’s triceps was torn. Her effort was brave, courageous, and resolute. She merits admiration.

Jamaican Spectacular

In the women’s two hundred meters, Veronica Campbell-Brown garnered gold. Allyson Felix scored silver. Kerron Stewart bagged bronze. Overall, Jamaica has won five gold, one silver, and two bronze medals. They have owned track.

Generation Next Garners Gold

On Thursday, the United States defeated Brazil 1-0. With their victory, America scored their second consecutive gold medal. They scored their third Olympic title. In the 2007 World Cup, Brazil obliterated America 4-0. Simply stated, Hope Solo is vindicated.

From 1986-2004, Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, and Mia Hamm were the soul. They won two gold medals. One silver medal. Two World Cup championships. Three CONCACAF championships. Their excellence is the next generation‘s mission. Today, that next generation issued their mission statement.

Rogue Idiot: Committee President Bashes Bolt

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge: “That’s not the way we perceive being a champion. I have no problem with him doing a show. I think he should show more respect for his competitors and shake hands, give a tap on the shoulder to the other ones immediately after the finish and not make gestures like the one he made in the 100 meters.”

“I understand the joy. He might have interpreted that in another way, but the way it was perceived was ‘catch me if you can.’ You don’t do that. But he’ll learn. He’s still a young man. He still has to mature. I would love him to show more respect for his competitors. That’s not the way we perceive being a champion. But he will learn in time. He should shake hands with his competitors and not ignore them. He’ll learn that sooner or later. But (he’s) a great athlete, of course.”

May & Walsh Make Children Proud

On Wednesday, Misty May and Kerri Walsh defeated Jia Tian and Jie Wang 21-18, 21-18. With their victory, May and Walsh scored their second consecutive gold medal. They won their one hundred and eighth consecutive match.

Superficially, fans exalt competition. They covet equality. They crave miniscule margins. Secretly, fans admire dominance. They recognize inexorable excellence. May and Walsh’s status underscores this. Every match, victory was assumed. Yet, America watched. America had to watch.

For Olympians, careers are fleeting. Retirement is rapid. Life and quadrennial increments cannot coexist. May and Walsh have acclaim. They have championships. They want children. Allegedly, they are unfinished. If their finale was this evening, May and Walsh’s conclusion was eternal.

BOLT DEUX

In the men’s two hundred meters, Usain Bolt set the world record. Shawn Crawford scored silver. Walter Dix bagged bronze. Churandy Martina and Wallace Spearmon, the original silver and bronze medallists, were disqualified.

As previously stated, track icons are perpetual. Donovan Bailey, Michael Johnson, Carl Lewis, and Jesse Owens were spectacular. However, Bolt is supreme. Others were challenged. They were contested. Bolt was unparalleled. He was unrivaled. He is generational.

Twenty-one is twenty-one.

University Presidents, students, and morons have a request. Reduce the drinking age. Instead of twenty-one, they propose eighteen. Their rationale? Twenty-one encourages binge drinking. Seriously? Fourteen? Twelve? Idiots hear this. Age and alcohol are coincidence.

Michael Phelps: Greatest Olympian

Eight events. Eight gold medals. The four hundred meter individual medley. The four man, four hundred meter relay. The two hundred meter freestyle. The two hundred meter butterfly. The four man, eight hundred meter relay. The two hundred meter individual medley. The one hundred meter butterfly. The four man, four hundred meter medley relay.

In 2008, Michael Phelps’ pursuit was momentous. In his career, Phelps’ accomplishments are monumental. Fourteen gold medals. Two bronze medals. Seven world championships. Thirty-eight national championships. Thirty-two world records. Thirteen Olympic records.

In the Olympics, Phelps owns the gold record. He does not own the overall record. Larissa Latynina possesses eighteen triumphs. Between 1956-196, the gymnast garnered nine gold medals. She scored five silver medals. She bagged four bronze medals. She also won two individual all-around competitions.

Sports is argument. Athletes are assessed. Eras are examined. Hank Aaron versus Alex Rodriguez. Vince Lombardi versus Bill Belichick. Michael Jordan versus Lebron James. Is Phelps superior? Nikolai Andrianov, Carl Lewis, Paavo Nurmi, and Mark Spitz have arguments. However, Phelps has the achievements.

Golden Girl Finally

In the balance beam, Shawn Johnson garnered gold. Nastia Liukin scored silver. Fei Cheng bagged bronze. Johnson is adorable. She is delightful. Obviously, her victory is wonderful. However, Johnson’s potential remains unrealized. In 2012, I hope she returns.

In the parallel bars, Xiaopeng Li garnered gold. Wonchul Yoo scored silver. Anton Fokin bagged bronze. In the horizontal bar, Kai Zou garnered gold. Jonathan Horton scored silver. Fabian Hambuechen bagged bronze. For Horton, his triumph was stellar. He merits praise. For China, a spectacular conclusion. With Michael Phelps, they owned the Olympics.

Artist Revisits Los Angeles

Major League Baseball covets the flamethrower. Authoritarian, robust monsters are cornerstones. Greg Maddux is not the aforesaid. He is not churlish. He is not muscular. His fastball is not seething. Maddux is an artiste. His accuracy is exacting. His repertoire is exquisite.

On Tuesday, the San Diego Padres traded Maddux to the Los Angeles Dodgers. As reciprocation, the Padres received a pair of minor leaguers. “You never really want to leave your team and your teammates and all that, but it's nice to be back in a pennant race,” said Maddux. “It was fun playing in San Diego and I loved it there. But I'm looking forward to the last month and a half here.”

Currently, the Dodgers are 64-60. In the National League West, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Dodgers are even. “Last to first,” said Maddux. “It's pretty cool. One off day and I make up 16 games, so I'm excited.”

During his career, Maddux has amassed a 353-223 record. He has posted 3.14 earned run average. “I love Greg Maddux,” said catcher Russell Martin. “The thing about Greg, he keeps everything so simple. People like to make things more complicated than they need to be. You learn a lot the way he approaches the game.”

On August 11, the Diamondbacks acquired Adam Dunn. Tonight, the Dodgers responded. Only one will advance. Clearly, both crave the opportunity.

No Lo Champion

In the women’s one hundred meter hurdles, Dawn Harper garnered gold. Sally Mclellan scored silver. Priscilla Lopes-Schliep bagged bronze. With victory impending, Lolo Jones tripped an obstacle. She was passed. She finished seventh. Jones’ collapse was stunning. How could she discard a gold medal?

Richards Relents, Gives Away Gold

In the women’s four hundred meters, Christine Ohuruogu garnered gold. Shericka Williams scored silver. Sanya Richards bagged bronze. Early, Richards was marvelous. She sprinted into the advantage. Unfortunately, she cramped. She crumbled. She surrendered victory.

Cincinnati Unthinkable

On Tuesday, the Cincinnati Bengals resigned Chris Henry. Previously, Owner Mike Brown stated this was impossible. “His conduct can no longer be tolerated,” said Brown. “The Bengals tried for an extended period of time to support Chris and his potentially bright career. We had hoped to guide him toward an appropriate standard of personal responsibility that this community would support and that would allow him to play in the NFL. ... But those efforts end today, as we move on with what is best for our team.”

In 2005, Henry drove sans a valid license, speeding, and with marijuana on his person. January 2006, he was charged firearm concealment and aggravated assault. June 2006, Henry was arrested for drunken driving. October 2006, Henry and teammates were arrested. Henry was benched and suspended. January 2007, Henry plead guilty to providing alcohol to minors. March 2008, Henry was arrested for assault.

Obviously, Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh are injured. With that stated, Cincinnati’s decision is inexcusable. There decision is reprehensible. Henry received numerous opportunities. He forfeited every one. Cincinnati could have acquired another. Instead, they offended their fans. They tarnished their franchise.
