Way to Go Steelers

Leadership requires action. Dan Rooney helped craft the NFL’s minority hiring policy. His policy created more interview opportunities. The aforesaid were accomplishments. With that stated, talking minority hiring is hollow. His stance required true validation.

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers hired Minnesota Vikings’ defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin. Stating Tomlin is the Steelers’ first African-American coach is insulting. He is only the sixth in NFL history. However, he was hired by someone who proposed minority hiring, preached minority hiring, and proceeded to hire a minority.

Tomlin may fail. Following three stable decades, he may be an incorrect hire. However, I applaud the Steelers for his hire. They have done more than address a controversial subject. They have showcased the courage of their historic convictions.
