On Wednesday, linebacker Lance Briggs signed a 1-year, $7.2 million contract. As reciprocation, the Chicago Bears relented. Assuming seventy-five percent participation, Briggs will not be franchised. He will become an unrestricted free agent. Chicago, why sign Briggs? You cannot retain him. You are not Super Bowl favorites. Your compromise was ludicrous.
