NEW RULE

Tragedies are not storylines.

In May, forty-nine year old Lori Drew was indicted. Drew was charged with conspiracy and computer trespass to access information and inflict emotional distress. Utilizing My Space, Drew masqueraded as a sixteen-year male. She befriended and betrayed thirteen-year-old Megan Meier. Meier committed suicide.

On Sunday, Desperate Housewives replicated this crime. Lynette Scavo masqueraded as a teenager. She and her son chatted. He pursued her. She rebuffed him. Unfortunately, her rejection concluded “Love Mom.” America may have chuckled. With that stated, this mockery was repulsive.

Obviously, television requires storylines. For these, writers utilize news. They should. However, they should also exercise restraint. Imitating tragedy is putrid. Mocking tragedy is unacceptable.
