Amidst Resurgence, Lidge Paid

On November 7, the Houston Astros traded Brad Lidge to the Philadelphia Phillies. On Sunday, the Phillies retained Lidge. He signed a 3-year, $37.5 million contract. “Right out of the chute, when we made the trade, we knew this wasn't going to be a one-and-done type of guy,” said Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. “We view Brad as somebody who can help us contend for many years. We all know how important it is to close out games you should win. This is an important piece to our organization's future.”

During his career, Lidge has accrued a 25-20 record. He has amassed 142 saves. He has posted a 3.10 earned run average. In 2007, Lidge racked a 5-3 record, 19 saves, and a 3.36 earned run average. In 2008, he has registered a 2-0 record, 19 saves, and a 1.00 earned run average. “I think if you're closing and you're going through a rough time, it's difficult no matter where you're at,” said Lidge. “I was really excited for this challenge. For whatever reason, coming in here, I felt like this was where I needed to be. I enjoy the fact that the fans here are so passionate about the game. That gives me a lot of energy. I love it here.”

In six seasons, Lidge has epitomized the closer. He has been invincible. He has struggled. He has exploded. He has recovered. He has exhibited amnesia. In Philadelphia, Lidge may yet implode. However, his present merits investment.
