Hingis: Champion Incomplete

Truth is subjective. Truth is both biased and prejudiced. Why? Truth is not universal. One may believe truth. One may abhor truth. One may label truth fiction. The difficulty? Only one knows the validity or fabrication of any statement. The person espousing “the truth.”

On June 29, Martina Hingis tested positive for cocaine. On Thursday, she retired. Despite a vehement denial, Hingis surrendered her career. “I am frustrated and angry,” she said. “I believe that I am absolutely, 100 percent innocent. I find this accusation so horrendous, so monstrous, that I have decided to confront it head-on by talking to the press.”

From 1995-2003, Hingis accrued 36 singles and 40 doubles titles. She garnered three Australian Open, one United States Open, and one Wimbledon singles championship. She also scored four Australian Open, two French Open, two Wimbledon, and one United States Open doubles championships. Following a two-year retirement, Hingis’ brilliance vanished. From 2005-2007, she recorded only three titles.

Is Hingis innocent? Is Hingis guilty? One may never know. The aforesaid fits Hingis. This scenario mirrors her career…. Enigmatic and interrupted.
