Fred Thompson: He’s W, Stupid
In 1966, California Governor Pat Brown broadcast a commercial. The ad aired as follows: “Ronald Reagan has played many roles. This year he wants to play Governor. Can you afford the price of admission?”
On September 5, Senator Fred Thompson announced his presidential candidacy. During his declaration, Thompson requested courage. “Our courage as a people must match that of the brave men and women in uniform fighting for us,” he said. “They know if we abandon our efforts, or appear weak and divided, we'll pay a heavy price for it in the future.”
From 1969-1972, Thompson served as Assistant United States Attorney. From 1994-2002, Thompson was a United States Senator. Amidst these posts, Thompson’s appointments included Senate Watergate Committee Minority Council, Senate Foreign Relations Special Council, Senate Intelligence Committee Special Council, and Tennessee Appellate Court Nominating Commission. Thompson has also been a lobbyist and actor. His notable roles include Law & Order, Days of Thunder, No Way Out, and The Hunt For Red October.
Thompson is staunchly conservative. He is pro-life, pro-defense, and pro-family. He is fiscally conservative. He supports the second amendment. He opposes immigration amnesty. Thompson’s views sharply contrast Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Governor Mitt Romney.
Obviously, Thompson is the perfect candidate. However, nominating him would be stupid. Republicans should not make this mistake. We should not act brain dead. President Bush has served seven years. America is fatigued. Another iron conservative will not win. Thus, nominating Thompson would be ridiculous.
In 1992, America faced an altering election. During that campaign, James Carville wrote three sentences and fourteen words. His final line was a variation of my title. His first line foretold 2008’s clash… change versus more of the same.
